Op-Ed: Taking Action to Prevent Distracted Driving

Portable technologies such as cell phones and text messaging devices have become a commonplace fixture in our everyday lives. Incidents of distracted driving have risen to unprecedented levels across our nation. According to the United States Department of Transportation, in 2008, at any given time during the day there were more than 800,000 drivers using hand-held devices while driving. These and other troublesome statistics have compelled many legislators across the country to take action and work to prevent this growing trend.

House Passes Bill to Join National Popular Vote Compact

State Representative Geraldo Alicea united with his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation to join an interstate compact ensuring that the candidate who wins the national popular vote is elected President of the United States.

House Passes Legislation Regulating Use of All-Terrain Vehicles 

State Representative Geraldo Alicea joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation prohibiting anyone under 14 years of age from operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and imposing strict penalties upon those who ride ATV’s recklessly or negligently.

House Passes Criminal Offender Record Information Reform 

State Representative Geraldo Alicea joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in passing legislation reforming the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) system and reducing the time period in which records can be accessed to 10 years for felony convictions and five years for misdemeanors.

House Passes Alicea ‘Novelty Lighter’ Bill 

Representative Geraldo Alicea (D-Charlton) announced today that the House has engrossed a bill that would prohibit the sale and distribution of novelty lighters in the Commonwealth. The bill, which was filed by Alicea at the beginning of the 2009-2010 legislative session, passed in the House on May 4th and now advances to the Senate for approval.
